New free model available for download : Ariel Atom II

Some months ago, I posted some blueprints from my Ariel Atom II model. Now, it’s time for full 3D model : I just released the complete and latest model for it, under a Creative Commons license (BY-SA)

Ariel Atom II render 039

This model once won the “Light is Right” contest at www.SMCars.net, but only with one vote ahead ! :)

You’ll find it in the Free Models page, as well as my previously released car, the Marcos 1800 GT.

A .zip file is available for download. It contains a .blend file, which is a Blender file. Download and install Blender first to read the file. The .blend file is organized using layers :

  • Layer #1 contains body panels and interior.
  • Layer #2 contains chassis with technical stuff attached to it.
  • Layer #3 contains wheels.
  • Layer #4 is just a test of a chassis with welds on it. No need for it, only layers 1 to 3 are required to gather the full model.
  • Layer #5 are my blueprint box and a wire representation of the chassis.

All required shaders are included. Please pay attention that this project was conducted using YafRay 0.0.9, so it won’t render “out of the box” properly without it (YafaRay won’t do the job here)

Feel free to post your thought about it below, please just keep in mind I didn’t have enough time to complete the model : for example, the engine is missing.

    Hi Tom,
    For the past 3years I’ve been looking for someone like you who can do 3D drawings with the ArielATOM car, at last i found you.. the only problem now is I am trying to import it to my 3DMax software (that’s what I use in my Achitectural 3Ddrawings) and for that reason I can easily turn it into a 2Ddwg with AutoCAD for the purpose of extracting the right dimension of the car, I’ve been very busy trying to merge your WireMesh BLENDER drawing to my 3Dmax but to my frustrations I failed.. Could you please in any way send me a full 3D drawing in a 3DMax format?I only want the FRAME of the car so If you could provide me one,.. I’m the happiest man in the world!…Please Help..Hope to hear from you soon.. THANKS!
    here is my e-mail: artcastle777@yahoo.co.uk

    Sorry for the late answer, and sorry because I can’t send you a .max file because I don’t have 3DS Max. But you should open the 3D model with Blender and remove first the “SubSurf” modifier, it’s the same thing as MeshSmooth or TurboSmooth in Max.

    Has someone managed to convert Tom’s model to something a novice like me can handle i.e. Solid Edge? Or is there someone who has managed to generate 2D drawings out of the model? -Or, can uncle Tom help us as well with 2D’s?

    PS: Tom is a hero :)

    Hi,
    I’m a young engineer who is wanting to structurally play with this model of yours for a university project however i’m having troubles converting this .Blend File to a .DWG file that will allow me to work on the chassis design in ProSteel or similar CAD Program. If you could assit me in anyway it would be very much appreciated.

    Kind Regards
    Pete

    Можно ли Вас как-нибудь в будущем попросить за денежное вознаграждение сделать модель машины по моим чертежам?

    Sorry I don’t understand russian at all, so I used automated translation, which gave me the following : “Can you somehow in the future to ask for monetary compensation to make a model car for my drawings?”

    Yes I’m capable of modeling a car from drawings, please send me a PM on http://www.smcars.net (my nickname there is tom120934) for further exchange about your project.

    Greetings Tom

    This looks splendid! I’m an Engineering student seriously considering building an Atom replica over the holidays, and yours seems to be the only available set of drawings anywhere on the web, so thank you!

    However, as I plan on actually assembling one of these, inserting my fragile human body into it and attempting to go VERY FAST… I am curious to know where you got your measurements from, and if you’re confident they’re (obviously, if given the right materials) going to give the required strength in a car of this nature.

    Any help is much appreciated!

    Regards,

    Thomas Mathew

    Hi Thomas,

    As an aerospace engineer myself, I really understand your concern. Be warned there is no warranty of any kind, implied or not, about my work here. My computer graphics cars are only artisstic work, so you should not rely on anything about safety / adequation for any purpose. What I did is only create a look-alike 3D model from reference pictures. I didn’t performed any calculation.

    What you should realize is even with a real Ariel Atom, you can injure/kill yourself. I’m french and in France this car is most famous for having been involved with the death of a quite-famous actor.

    Anyways, I would love to learn more about your project. Any details to share ? Any URL maybe ?

    @Tom

    Thank you for your swift reply! As yet, I don’t have anything to show except the idea (originally that of a semi-retired Mechanical Engineer who has built a few pipe cars in his time, but nothing the likes of this, I don’t think) and a few internet resources, such as your site here.

    There’s a guy on Flickr who has built a pretty good-looking and apparently working replica of an Atom II (here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25435483@N00/1580929392/), but he doesn’t seem to be responding to the countless requests on his page for accurate drawings or 3D models. Some folks have even offered to pay for them, but this doesn’t seem to be working either (unless he’s contacting them privately – who knows?)

    Do you know of anywhere such drawings might be available?

    With regards to safety – yes, I am very aware of this. I am by no means a competent racing driver (yet) and as such will not be attempting anything that I wouldn’t do in a normal car, nor drive a vehicle like this without full body harnesses, helmet, fire-resistant clothing, etc etc. Already in looking at sketches of the car I’m considering adding some sort of roll bar (in case of the unlikely eventuality that the car decides to be the other way up)

    Thanks again (and I will keep you posted – if you wish…)

    @Thomas Mathew
    My model is only based on reference pictures. I didn’t have any access to CAD drawing nor orthographic views.

    I only used basic data available on the internet : total height, width, height, front and rear tracks, wheelbase, rim & tire size. First step was to create a 3D layout of the chassis, to make sure every pipe was included, about the right size and the right place. But it’s only about, as I didn’t get any numerical reference.

    As long as you trust my work, you can use my free 3D model to get measurements and orthographic drawings. For example, I created blueprints from my model, they can be found here.

    I’m usually hanging at http://www.SMCars.net (I’m administrator there) It’s a community of car enthusiasts and 3D artists. I think you can get a lot of feedback for your replica project. See you there if it suits you, register for free and post a thread. I have contacts with other people on their way for their own replicas, I guide them there as well.

    Hello Tom,

    I was able successfully get your model over into 3ds max. With your permission, I’d like to make it available for download (for free) at Turbo Squid. Or we can trade emails and I can find some way to send you the .max file.

    Hi Jeff,

    The full 3D model here available on download for free is intended to be your number one source for all your questions. Please download Blender software and the model, you’ll be able to take all the dimensions you want directly from the model.

    @Alexander
    Hi Alexander,

    These files are shared under a CC BY-SA license. That means, technically, you can do it without asking me for permission, as long as you share it under CC BY-SA license and as long as you mention I’m the author.

    But about Turbo Squid, I already posted my models (in .blend format) there, to try to sell them if anyone is interested. Feel free to give them away elsewhere, or sell them and think about a reward for me if you earn money from my work :)
