Now, it’s time for full 3D model : I just released the complete and latest model for it, under a Creative Commons license (BY-SA)

This model once won the “Light is Right” contest at www.SMCars.net, but only with one vote ahead ! :)

You’ll find it in the Free Models page, as well as my previously released car, the Marcos 1800 GT.

A .zip file is available for download. It contains a .blend file, which is a Blender file. Download and install Blender first to read the file. The .blend file is organized using layers :

  • Layer #1 contains body panels and interior.
  • Layer #2 contains chassis with technical stuff attached to it.
  • Layer #3 contains wheels.
  • Layer #4 is just a test of a chassis with welds on it. No need for it, only layers 1 to 3 are required to gather the full model.
  • Layer #5 are my blueprint box and a wire representation of the chassis.

All required shaders are included. Please pay attention that this project was conducted using YafRay 0.0.9, so it won’t render “out of the box” properly without it (YafaRay won’t do the job here)

Feel free to post your thought about it below, please just keep in mind I didn’t have enough time to complete the model : for example, the engine is missing.

The grid seen in background has 10cm steps. The model is unfinished but anyways it’s the best blueprint for Ariel Atom 2 I have ever seen – as it’s the only one I’ve seen !

The modeling process continues but as a little break, I tried to find out some new interesting setups for rendering. Here’re the 3 setups I got :

The first one is a simple outdoor setting. A textured plane acts as a simple ground. The background is an HDRI map, and is used for global illumination. A single light is added to add bright sunlight.

The second one is a circle of many lights around the car, in a totally black environment. There’s almost no need for global illumination, as each light casts shadows : a smooth blend of shadows can be obtained with enough lights. In this picture, there’s about 40 lights.

The last pic is a simple studio scene. A great white plane is located above the car. It’s emitting the only light used in the scene.

Nothing more than about 950kg !

The deadline is for end of August. So far, we’re 12 competitors. Of course I’m in the contest, with a 2004 Ariel Atom II.

I first discovered about the car in a review by french publication “SportAuto” : 7 pages by Laurent Chevalier with great photos by their impressive photograph Greg. That was in October, 2003.

I’m going for a as-full-as-possible modeling of it. Realistic renderings above and below are done with Blender internal renderer. It’s not able to do Global Illumination, but carefully tweaking Ambient Occlusion allowed me to be pretty satisfied with the result. Especially with the last render I produced, shown above.
